German Wwi Machine Gunners Bayonet Gew 98 Sawback
I came across this bayonet years ago at an old neighbor's house whose widow wanted it gone from her sight. It is in very good condition and has several small symbols stamped(tiny #28 in the scabbard tip and opening, a small eagle or bird in the blade etc.
) in to personalize it for the soldier it was issued to i'd guess here is some more info i have found on this item german wwi machine gunner's bayonet gew 98 sawback. Often referred to as the machine gunner's bayonet this is a mauser long gew 98 sawback bayonet principally issued to machine gun crews and pioneers. Hideous though as a wound from one of these might have been they were intended for use in cutting wood for gun emplacements. The sawback bayonet, first developed by the british in the 19th century, caused much animosity towards the germans in wwi with allied visions of horrendous civilian slaughter of women and children. Stories circulate that german prisoners were executed for carrying sawback bayonets, and it is certainly true that the bayonest can be found today with the sawbacks removed, perhaps by nervous german soldiers!
Perhaps this would be a good addition to someon'e collection. Powered by ebay turbo listerthe free listing tool. List your items fast and easy and manage your active items. |
